As of 23 April 2005 I own this volvo 740 as a replacement of my previous volvo 740.
I found this car at a local ebay lookalike site, just like all my other volvo
700 cars. The clutch is defective, but this is all that needs to be fixed to get
the car running. The MOT is valid till november 2005, so there is more then enough
time left for a proper shakedown of the car.
The car has 474.000 km on it, with a distribution kit that's bin fitted 20.000
km ago. I don't suspect much supprices, but tha car is still being taken of the road
to do some refitting.
The car was bought with a non functioning clutch. The dutch AA suspected the slave clutch cylinder. After a quick inspection we agreed. (as the fluid should not be on the street)
After a short testdrive I took the car to work the next day. On the way back home the clutch failed again. This time we looked at the lever and were a bit supprised to find it in this state.
Currently I'm waiting for the replacement lever, so I started to do some work on the car. I was planning to add the airoc first, but I've added the rear electric windows first. Mainly because I needed the space in the house and it was the easiest job.
While collecting the leather interior shown below I also received an undamaged set of door covers without the holes for the manual window mechanisms. To bad I still have to find a way to bolt the doorhandles on.
Just to pass some time I've decided to clean the cockpit. It was very dirty and the speedometer was 10km off. As it's a large story I've made a seperate page for it.
It's been running as a charm for the last 4 years (yeah, the previous update was
from 2005) and the 9 series nose job was completed. received 2 sets of new tyres,
the last set approx 10.000 km ago. Also the leather interior plans have been
abandoned, the original interior was way nicer, so I kept it.
At the moment however, there is some work to be done on
the car. The doorsill on the right was showing some rust, so I decided to replace
it completely and bought an after market version of it. As this is a major job and
it's pretty cold outside now, I've decided to go for a quick fix this authumn and
replace the sill completely next spring.
The first part of the job is done, the damaged spots are cleared of paint. I'm glad the third nasty spot wasn't a hole.
The 2 rustholes are cut from the sill and moved to the bin, together with all the leaves I found inside.
The holes are welded. (only 2 holes were welded)
And some novorox has been applied.
Now we need to finish the sill, first filler (yeah, I know, a lot of it, but I don't care, it's coming off anyway)
Ok, time for some paint, first primer, next by 3 layers of paint and a clear coating.
When I would be really perfectionistic (need to find correct translation), I would not be happy at all. However, at the moment the new sill is waiting to be welded into the car, something I have planned for may, so this will have to do. I'm sure it will hold out till then.
To keep track of the work that has to be done on the cars, I've added a small list of repairs that still have to be done. The dots are colorcoded.
I've added a nice app to calculate all costs made for this car. Just folow
the link.
