1986 Volvo 740

As of 10 October 2015 I own this volvo 740. This car replaces the ex-temp/daily Volvo 940. The car was getting really bad and wouldn't pass the next MOT. (or to be more precise, It wouldn't without huge expenses, which it wasn't worth)

1986 volvo 740 frontal I found this car at the Volvo Klassieker Beurs 2015. I was there as an interim board member of the Volvo 700 Vereniging. At first sight I dismissed the car as being to bad (lots of work to do) and to expensive for it's state. However, the seller was at the stand and was looking for a buyer, so the car didn't have to be exported. It was imported from Belgium, got put on license with less weight then usual (less roadtax), was equipped with an LPG system in 2011, no weight added (was already exempt from roadtax) and so no increase in tax due to the weight and it came with full history since importing. I'm not complaining now, as we now have to pay full road tax again, even though the car is older then 25.

As you might guess, I made a test drive, negotiated a price which I could afford and left me with a nice budget to repair all that was known and unknown. So as of October 10th 2015, this is my daily. To bad it still needs an MOT before the end of November. To meet that deadline, lots of work has already gone in the car.

Door handle During negotiations about the price, the owner discovered that the clutch was almost dead. This was the second big job I knew I had, the first being an exhaust replacement. However, the car had several other issues that had to be fixed as well.

  • Repair rear wiper
  • Repair right front door handle
  • Replace clutch

  • Replace rear transmission seal
  • Replace rear shocks
  • Replace rear springs
  • Replace transmission oil

Body:

  • Complete body paintjob (visible rust treated to survive winter)
  • Fix/replace sunroof
  • Remove ugly 'Touring' sticker from body
  • Repair some rust before it's an MOT failure (next year)
  • Replace left door handles with matching chrome set
  • Replace wheelcovers with matching set

Interior:

  • Luggage rack
  • Roof ligning (missing)
  • Replace seats (burnmarks in all seats, height adjustment not fitted on driver seat)
  • Replace left rear door cover
  • Replace several plastic parts (blue)

Upgrades:
